What is iLASIK and Why is it Superior?

iLASIK Surgery

With the advancement of technology, LASIK surgery is now safer and easier to perform than ever before. This also led to newer variations of the procedure like the iLASIK surgery.

iLASIK surgery uses bladeless, wavefront-guided LASIK to correct myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. It offers greater precision and can also correct vision and unique imperfections of the eye which cannot be achieved by conventional LASIK surgery.

iLASIK Surgery Process

A custom 3-D map of the patient’s eye is created using Wavefront technology. These images are unique to every individual. Numbing eye drops are then given and a device holds the patient’s eyes open.

The IntraLase laser creates a thin flap in the cornea. Next, an excimer laser uses the information from the 3-D map to reshape the cornea. The flap is put back in place. Light can now focus better on the retina, which corrects the refractive error of the eye.

The entire process lasts about twenty minutes.

Benefits of iLASIK Surgery

iLASIK surgery is generally preferred over conventional LASIK surgery due to the following reasons.

  1. Greater precision with lower risks: In iLASIK surgery, the corneal incision and circular cut is created by the femtosecond laser, eliminating the usage of sharp surgical tools. This laser technique is more precise and gentler on the eye, thereby reducing the risk of injury and complications.
  1. Corrects vision and unique imperfections of the eye: The bladeless, wavefront-guided LASIK corrects high order aberrations, which cannot be achieved with conventional LASIK surgery. This precision technology can help patients achieve the best visual outcome.
  1. Shorter treatment time needed: The system provides clear 3D images of the patient’s eye in real time. The excimer laser will then use the information to make customised adjustments. With these fully customised images, the process can be completed within twenty minutes.
  1. Suitable for patients with thin corneas: Patients who naturally have thinner corneas can get better results as the laser utilises the 3-D map of the eye to make a more precise, thin corneal flap. This flap is much thinner compared to the flap that is made by surgical tools in conventional LASIK surgery.
