LASIK results: How Long Can Your Improved Vision Last?

The 3 steps of iLASIK surgery
Step 1 / iDesign 3D Mapping
- Using the WaveScan Technology, this eye test creates a 3D map of the unique imperfections of the eye in real time which is unique to every individual eye.
- The obtained data is then transferred to the VISX excimer laser machine for the LASIK surgeon to perform a custom Wavefront-guided LASIK treatment.
STEP 2 / Creation of corneal flap with the IntraLase femtosecond machine
- Numbing eye drops are applied to the eye to minimise pain and discomfort during surgery.
- A suction ring is positioned on the eye to hold it in place.
- Can feel some pressure on the eye and vision will blackout for 10 to 20 seconds.
- The IntraLase femtosecond machine is used to create a corneal flap non-invasively as the LASIK surgeon folds the flap backwards.
Step 3 / Correction of refractive errors with the VISX excimer laser
- To focus on a red blinking light to align the eye with the VISX excimer laser.
- The laser is applied to gently reshape the cornea to the desired curvature based on the customised eye map taken at Step 1.
- When the lasering completes, the corneal flap is repositioned and will heal by itself with no stitches required.
The whole iLASIK procedure takes about 15 minutes for 2 eyes.
Long-term results: For many, LASIK provides long-term improvement in vision, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. However, some individuals may experience changes in their vision over time and may require enhancements.
LASIK suitability:
Eye health: The health of the eye is paramount in determining if you are a suitable candidate for LASIK surgery and how well the procedure will work. Eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataract or keratoconus may render you ineligible for LASIK surgery.
Stable prescription: LASIK surgery is typically recommended for individuals whose eye prescription has remained stable for at least 12 months. Significant fluctuations in prescription may indicate underlying eye conditions or instability, which could affect the accuracy of LASIK surgery correction. Ensuring a stable prescription helps maximise the long-term effectiveness of LASIK surgery.
Age: You must be at least 18 years ago, as vision tends to stabilise by this age.
What if you have presbyopia?
Presbyopia typically develops around 40 years of age. As we age, the eye muscles weaken and hence, we will find difficulty in seeing near things. For this group of people, monovision LASIK correction is usually recommended if the dominant eye is corrected to see far while the non-dominant eye is corrected to see near. Most people adjust to monovision well with no headache or imbalance.
Post-LASIK surgery care
Following your LASIK surgeon’s post-surgery care instructions diligently can significantly contribute to the recovery and long-term stability of the vision. This typically includes using prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammation and lubricating eye drops. Avoid rubbing the eye for the first 2 weeks, and attend follow-up appointments to monitor recovery.
